When I was 17, I moved to Richmond and decided to study music with the intention that it was the "field" that I was going to work in for the rest of my days. After one semester, I changed majors. Music is not fun when someone forces you to play a certain way, sing a certain way and study it a certain way. That absolutely and utterly removes the very core of music from itself, which I believe is an art that cannot be forced.
However you enjoy music, whether it be by writing it, playing it, feeling it deep down in your soul, or just leisurely listening to it in the car while driving, you should only be listening to the best of the best. So I've compiled a list for you of what I believe are some of the greatest songs of all time. Some songs on this list are sung by my favorite artists and oddly, some of my favorite artists have been left off of this list. Even more odd, some of these tunes are the only songs I've ever heard by the artist and everything else in their catalog could be crap. Let's hope for their sake that's not true. Enjoy! If you have any songs that you are compelled to add to this list or that you think I should give a listen to, let me know!
In no particular order:
Stevie Winwood - Roll With it Baby
Thicke - Brand New Jones (Here's a random A cappella group version that I thought did a great job.)
Annie Lennox - Walking om Broken Glass
Jackie Wilson - Your Love (Lifting me Higher) and Lonely Drops
Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered
Rufus Wainwright - Poses
Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Free - All Right Now
Incubus - Are you in?
Brenton Woods - Gimme A Sign
Chris Gaines - Lost in You
Hanson - Been There Before and Georgia (Say what you want about Hanson, but they've come a long way since MMMBop and they are probably one of the least appreciated bands on the planet and that's unfortunate because they are insanely talented. Here's a live version of Been There Before.)
Jason Mraz - Burning Bridges
Dave Barnes - Carry Me Through
Brandi Carlile - Late Morning Lullaby
Eric Hutchinson - Food Chain
Alana Davis - You Do
Martin Sexton - Angeline
The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow (They performed the crap out of this song a few years ago at the Grammy's and then broke up. Boo!)
Coldplay - Everything's Not Lost
Tracy Chapman - Give me One Reason
Phil Collins - Sussudio
Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of a Bay
Van Morrison - Mystic
Wyonna Judd - Only Love
Hall & Oates - I Can't Go For That
The Allman Brothers - Midnight Rider
