Keeping Christ in Easter

This past Christmas, our family did a special advent calendar countdown. Each day our girls opened a bag with a daily scripture (usually pertaining to the birth of Christ) and an activity or treat for the day. Our girls loved it! We felt it was the perfect way to get them excited about Christmas and gifts, but more importantly to also keep them excited about Christ, his love and the true meaning of Christmas (I'd be happy to share some photos and ideas that we used on a later blog post).

It was such a success in this household, that we have decided to do a countdown for Easter as well. For Christmas, we counted down the whole month, but we are just doing 12 days for Easter.

If your household is anything like mine, then you are always searching for ways to have fun, but also to save money. This will definitely satisfy both of those concepts. I used an empty egg carton and filled it with 12 plastic eggs that I've been reusing for the last 4 years. Inside each egg is a slip of paper with a daily scripture and our activity or treat for the day. In no particular order or sequence, here are the activities:

Picnic, paint plastic eggs, donate, bake a cake, Easter craft, plant flowers, egg hunt, ice cream game, dye eggs, sticker craft, go to the movies, Easter baskets.

All of these items were purchased at Target in the dollar bins. I also purchased seeds for a dollar. I spent $100 (total) on items for their Easter baskets as well as all the items above for their countdown. We will be starting next Wednesday (the 16th) and continuing on until Easter day (the 27th).

Here are the scriptures I have chosen:

Mark 10: 13-16, Psalm 34, John 17: 1-5, John 20: 11-18, John 19: 40-42, Matthew 17: 22&23, Luke 24: 5-12, Psalm 100, Mark 16: 19&20, John 17: 24-26, Luke 22: 63-65, John 19: 17-19.

Of course any and all of this can be modified to fit your family, lifestyle, etc.
